World Teacher Day 2019 - Food for thought

Saturday Oct. 5th was World Teacher Day 2019 with a themeI find especially important,
"Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession". Monday the 7th is the official recognition date in Paris. In these days of such vitriolic partisanship on what seems to be almost every conceivable topic, I think it is even more vital to support education regardless of where you may find yourself. I believe education and an inquisitive and informed populace to be the heart of any successfully functioning democracy. The ability to have informed and civil conversations about what is important to each of us, respecting our differences, and recognizing our commonality is essential. I'm Still Standing...

As Aaliyah sang at 15, "Age ain't nothing but a number" and while three years have flown by and much has changed since last I posted - I am still standing (sure another song reference).  This proved to be a marvelous theme song for this summer getting the youngest out of 8th grade and into high school and the oldest into a better collegiate fit, back here in CO.  And it is a particularly enjoyable theme for the year after watching  Rocketman  during 8th Grade "graduation" celebration with the Daniel contingent out from the Carolinas with the graduate.  He was both entertained and humored by his father and aunt belting out that and other songs with the movie. Judgement Day

I spent a great Saturday going to support my youngest as a participant in an area Speech and Debate meet.  As part of the lingering cast of characters - coaches, parents, support persons I found myself volunteering to judge the varsity level Congress panels one AM session and one PM session.  During the time I witnessed high school students wrestling with some relevant ideas of stemming the occurrences of gun violence with Red Flag laws, lifting the trade embargo with Cuba, college student loan forgiveness, among others on the possible docket.  They cajoled one another for affirmation or negation of the proposed resolutions, some  had crafted arguments on both sides, ensuring there was a balance of position to consider.  They managed time for presenting arguments, asking questions, making sure there was recognition of a diversity of speakers and participation through precedence who had priority to make sure voices around the room were heard.  And after th...
